Cinco De Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Who doesn't enjoy a good reason to have a taco and a Corona?! Was Cinco de Mayo created just for me?! Apparently not!

In case you didn't know, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated to commemorate the Mexican army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  (And here I thought it was just to celebrate all the great Mexican food!). In Mexico, the day is primarily celebrated with street fairs, music, dancing, and traditional Mexican games.

If you are not lucky enough to be in Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year, here are some ways you can celebrate from home:

1.     Learn about the history: Take some time to understand the significance of the holiday and the events that led to the Battle of Puebla.  Learn what this day means to the people of Mexico.

2.     Attend a local event: Look for local celebrations, parades, or festivals in your area. Many cities in the United States and Mexico have events to mark the occasion.  A quick google search could help you find some in your area. Maybe you can make a new friend.

3.     Enjoy Mexican food: (My favorite way to celebrate!) Prepare or enjoy traditional Mexican dishes like tacos, tamales, enchiladas, or mole poblano. Don't forget to pair them with some delicious margaritas or Mexican beer.  Many local restaurants have great specials on Mexican food, including Tacos and Margaritas!

4.     Listen to Mexican music: Create a playlist of Mexican music, including traditional songs and modern hits, to get into the festive spirit.

5.     Decorate: Decorate your home with Mexican-themed decorations like piñatas, or Mexican flags.  If you don’t like those decorations, you could incorporate some traditional Mexican colors with everyday items to add a little flair to your area.

6.     Learn a Mexican dance: Consider learning a traditional Mexican dance like salsa, cumbia, or the Mexican hat dance.  Don’t be afraid to let loose and have some fun!

7.     Support Mexican artisans: Purchase Mexican crafts or artwork to support local artisans and celebrate Mexican culture.  Let’s spread a little love on this day!

8.     Share the celebration: Invite friends and family to join you in celebrating Cinco de Mayo. You can host a party or just answer yes to an invite to be a +1.  Don’t forget the tacos and tequila!

Enjoy this day in whatever fashion you chose to participate and just remember… who doesn’t like celebrating other cultures, meeting up with a good friend, or possibly even making a new friend over good Mexican food, drinks and cheer?
